This Windfarm project was undertaken for Roaring 40s, in conjunction with Areva T&D Australia.  Work included the construction of a Windfarm and all associated infrastructures, with completion of the overall project in January 2007.  Hazell Bros Group was responsible for the civil works and electrical cabling components including connection of the transformers.

Scope of work:

  • Establish a fully functional site office for six companies (including offices, meeting rooms, lunch rooms, ablution facilities, power, on-site waste water treatment, phone, fax, and internet)
  • Operate a quarry to extract the 55,000 BCM of pavement materials needed for the road work
  • Construction of 24km of gravel access road through existing paddocks including all culverts, culvert headwalls, drain on both sides, 5m minimum usage width, and road signage
  • Construction of 25no 45m x 45m hardstands to position the crane for erection of the tower and the Wind Turbine Generators
  • Establish and operate two mobile concrete batch plants to produce the estimated 15,000m3 of concrete required by the various phases of the work
  • Construction of 25no 16.6 x 16.6 reinforced concrete footings for the towers. Each footing contained 40t of reinforcing steel and 450m3 of concrete
  • Installation of 25km of underground cables between the various turbine sites
  • Design and construction of the Control Building and construction of the switchyard footings
  • Erection of 5km of transmission line including temporary access roads and pole footings
  • The towers are 80m tall, making them the tallest wind farm towers in the Southern Hemisphere at the time of completion

With approval of DIMIA and cooperation of CFMEU, Hazell Bros hosted seven East Timorese construction workers for over six months.  During this period, the team gained valuable experience, training and competencies working in the civil construction industry, and were warmly welcomed by Hazell Bros.  Hazell Bros Group spent between 2000 - 2003 undertaking rehabilitation works in East Timor, and some of this team of men worked with the Group during this time.

The project was very successful, with Hazell Bros achieving 125,000 man hours LTI free and receiving numerous commendations for management of environmental and safety aspects of the work.  The environmental focus was very strong, with the need to protect the rare orange bellied parrot, whose nesting and flight paths were in the vicinity of the works.
