The seventy year old Lake Margaret Pipeline is a timber pipeline made of King Billy pine which feeds the turbines of Tasmania's first hydro electric facility. Originally operated by Mt Lyell Mining to supply electricity to its copper mine operations near Queenstown, it is now owned by Hydro Tasmania.
Located in remote Western Tasmania, Lake Margaret is subject to abundant rainfall which powers the Lake Margaret Power Station. Deterioration of the timber woodstave components over time has caused the pipeline to spring leaks. Hazell Bros was awarded the subsequent design and construct redevelopment contract, maintaining heritage value by constructing a new woodstave timber pipeline.
The new pipeline is 1.2 metres in diameter and is made from Alaskan Yellow Cedar, sourced from Portland, Oregon.
Scope of works included:
- Design of steel pipeline supports, associated temporary structures and motorised inspection/maintenance trolley
- Testing and surveying of works
- Protection of heritage/preserved structures and environmentally sensitive areas
- Establishment of site and erection of temporary structures for materials handling
- Upgrade of access road
- Demolition and removal of existing 2.2km woodstave timber and steel supports
- Fabrication and erection of galvanised steel woodstave pipeline supports
- Construction of new pedestrian access walkway track
- Unloading and storage of woodstave pipeline materials and construction of woodstave pipeline
- Installation and commissioning of motorised pipeline inspection/maintenance trolley
- Upgrade works within upper power station tailrace
- Upgrade works to surge pipeline at hilltop
